SPOTLIGHT: When are children ready for mobile phones?

In light of kid-friendly phones coming to the market, including LG's Migo, Firefly and the Bratz phone, a recent survey from Compete indicates that most parents believe that the appropriate age for children to have a cell phone is between the ages of 10 and 12. Interestingly enough, kids getting these phones are much younger. Are we talking about parents giving in to their childrens' every desire? Well, most want it for safety reasons, which is why Compete says it will be essential for marketers to convince parents that the benefit of a reliable line of parent-to-child communication outweighs any uneasiness in giving mobile phones to young children.
