T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) and Sprint's (NYSE: S) Boost Mobile prepaid brand are unveiling dueling sets of promotions aimed at the prepaid market just ahead of Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer.
T-Mobile is also launching the LG Stylo smartphone for $289.92
Both carriers are keen to juice their prepaid numbers as part of an effort to grow overall subscriber numbers. The late spring and early summer are also traditional promotional periods for many carriers.
T-Mobile said that anyone switching to MetroPCS between now and June 30 from competitors like Sprint's Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile brands will be able to get a free Samsung Galaxy Light, LG Optimus F60 or LG Leon LTE smartphone, via instant rebates. Customers can also get a $50 credit toward other phones.
MetroPCS is also re-launching its "4 for $100" promotional offer, which gives customers four lines for $100, featuring unlimited voice, texting and 2 GB of LTE data per line before throttling. T-Mobile said the offer is for a limited time but did not say when it will end.
T-Mobile is also launching the LG Stylo smartphone for $289.92 at full price, or for $0 and $12.08 per month for $24 months. The LG Leon will be available for $149.76 at full price or $0 down and $6.24 per month for 24 months. Additionally, T-Mobile said the Leon will be available at MetroPCS for $49 (after instant rebate) starting this Friday, and customers can get the Stylo starting in June for $199.
Finally, T-Mobile said customers can double up on memory for Samsung's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The 64 GB version of both devices will cost the same as the 32 GB versions, an $80 savings. For those who just want a 32 GB version, they can get a $50 Visa pre-paid gift card, making it the same price as the 16 GB versions. That promotion will run from May 23 to 25.
Meanwhile, as first noted by Wave7 Research and confirmed by Sprint, Boost Mobile launched a promotion that doubles the data buckets for its $45 and $55 per month plans and also provides a free smartphone for customers who port their number to Boost. Customers must be porting from a non-Sprint -related carrier.
The $45 price point previously provided 5 GB of data but is now being doubled to 10 GB, and the $55 plan provided 10 GB but is doubling to 20 GB. Customers who sign up under the promotion will get to keep the doubled data allotments once the after the promotion ends, which it is scheduled to on July 5. The promotion is only available at participating Boost dealers.
Customers porting to Boost can also get any of five smartphones for free, including the Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Lumia 635, LG Tribute, LG Volt, Motorola Moto E and ZTE Speed. According to Wave7, certain other devices are discounted by $100 for porting customers, including the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.
"Inventory availability will vary depending on the store and if a customer is looking for a specific device, [it] might be good to call ahead and see what is available for the promotion," Sprint spokeswoman Danielle Babbington said.
