Sprint’s John Saw voted the top Rising Star in wireless for 2018

More than 26,000 votes were cast, and the winner is Sprint’s John Saw.

Last week, FierceWireless published “Executives to watch: 13 rising stars of wireless.” It lists the top executives the FierceWireless editorial team considers on the rise in the industry this year. The list includes executives from some of the nation’s largest wireless carriers as well as those from top vendors and leading industry associations.

As part of that feature, we held a poll so you could vote for your favorite rising star.

And it is a longtime industry veteran who is walking away with the prize. Partly thanks to a substantial social media campaign, Sprint’s CTO John Saw received the most votes last week, narrowly edging out AT&T’s Marachel Knight and Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon for the top spot.

Here are the full results:

Saw joins OneWeb’s Greg Wyler in the Rising Stars winner circle (Wyler won last year’s vote).

For the rest of 2018, Saw will continue to build out Sprint’s substantial 2.5 GHz holdingswith more than $5 billion in fundingwith an eye on launching 5G services sometime next year. Concurrently, Saw will continue to push Sprint’s proposed merger with T-Mobile, a transaction the companies have argued will create a 5G powerhouse.

For those of you who voted, thanks so much for participating. And congratulations again to all of our Rising Stars. – Mike | @mikeddano
