The Supreme Court unanimously decided to send a discrimination lawsuit involving Sprint back to a lower court so that the lower court could clarify its ruling. The carrier dismissed manager Ellen Mendelsohn, 51, as part of a workforce reduction in 2002. Mendelsohn claimed the dismissal was part of a wider age discrimination pattern at the company and gathered four other dismissed workers over the age of 40 to testify on her behalf. The original District Court agreed with Sprint that these other dismissed workers were in different parts of the company and had different managers, making their testimony irrelevant. An Appeals Court, however, reversed that decision and allowed their testimony. The Supreme Court sent the case back to the District Court and asked it to clarify its ruling.
