T-Mobile USA to launch Android phone in late October

T-Mobile USA is planning to release its first phone powered by Google's Android mobile software in late October, hoping it can compete with Apple's iPhone 3G and Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices for a piece of the smartphone market pie.

There had been rumors that T-Mobile's Android phone would be delayed until late 2008 or early 2009, but a report in the Wall Street Journal cited those at T-Mobile who were familiar with the matter as confirming the October launch date. T-Mobile hopes to position itself as a direct competitor to the iPhone 3G as the holiday shopping season picks up.
