Trend: Western European voice revenues peaking

According to a report from Strategy Analytics, voice revenue growth in Western Europe has dropped "precipitously" to 1 percent during the first quarter of this year. Half of the carriers in the region reported annual falls in voice revenues during the quarter, as revenues per minute from wireless voice calls dropped 12 percent because of regulatory pressure and amid fierce competition. Vodafone Germany says voice revenues fell 9 percent, while carriers in Spain fared better than the rest with revenue growth ranging from 6 percent at Orange to 11 percent at Vodafone. The report notes that Western European carriers rely on voice calls for 80 percent of their revenues.
