Updated: Rumor Mill: Did T-Mobile get hacked?

T-Mobile USA said it has investigated an online posting by hackers, who alleged that they had accessed sensitive customer and company information, and at this time has found "no evidence" that the information has been compromised.  The carrier said in a statement that reports to the contrary are inaccurate.

Hackers said they cracked into T-Mobile's servers and stole proprietary operating data, customer databases and financial records, according to several reports.

The purported hackers said they had tried to shop the info to T-Mobile's competitors, and the companies declined the offer. The hackers were said to be looking to sell the data to the highest bidder.

"T-Mobile continues to monitor this situation and as a precaution has taken additional measures to further ensure our customers' information and our systems are protected," the company said in its statement. "As is our standard practice, customers can be assured if there is any evidence that customer or system information has been compromised, we would inform those affected as quickly as possible."

Interestingly, the carrier was targeted in a 2004 hack by Nicholas Jacobsen, who was arrested by special agents of the U.S. Secret Service. He plead guilty in 2005.
