VZW subs surpass 10 billion texts in June

Verizon Wireless subscribers sent and received more than 10 billion text messages in June, which the carrier said is a record number for a single month. Verizon Wireless customers also sent and received more than 200 million multimedia messages. The carrier attributed the soaring text numbers to the handsets "that make it easy to text" like the enV, which has a QWERTY keyboard.

Text messaging is popular among younger generations that have been brought up on unlimited texting plans from many service providers, including Verizon Wireless. Texting has also had its share of negative press--most recently, text messages were found to be sent and received from a phone belonging to the driver of a car that crashed and killed five cheerleaders in New York in late June. Some states are considering legislation that would make it illegal to text while driving, while Washington is the only state that has passed one.
