Every year FierceWireless editors evaluate dozens of the most innovative and smart emerging companies in the wireless industry. Our final selection--the top 15--are awarded a Fierce 15 designation and featured prominently in the newsletter. We typically make our selections based upon the numerous briefings and interactions our editors have with companies in the industry every year. To qualify for the Fierce 15, a company must be privately held, well funded, emerging (founded in the past few years) and have the potential to become a major player in the industry. In this tough economic climate, we're finding that there are fewer emerging companies, but the stronger firms stand out because of the current difficulties involved in landing VC funds. I'd also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the newest member of the Fierce editorial team, Mike Dano. Many of you may already know Mike from his nine-year stint with RCR Wireless News, as both a reporter and online editor. Mike joins Fierce as the managing editor of the Wireless Group where he will be overseeing the Web sites, managing the delivery of the newsletters and handling the special editorial features.
