Verizon kicks off Apply Your Ideas developer contest

SAN JOSE--Verizon Wireless announced the launch of its "Apply Your Ideas" application development contest in conjunction with its first Verizon Developer Community event, held here Tuesday. The competition, open to all registered Verizon developers, promises a $50,000 cash grand prize as well as a $25,000 People's Choice award--in addition, both apps will receive 100 percent of revenues earned during their first 12 months of availability in the operator's forthcoming V Cast Apps storefront, slated to go live in the fourth quarter.

Developers are encouraged to submit applications in five Apply Your Ideas categories: Connect (social networking apps, communication tools, news and information), Entertain (games, multimedia apps), Guide (leverage location-based services and travel/navigation information), Save Time (tools, utilities, business, finance) and Enhance Living (lifestyle categories like health and shopping). A $10,000 cash prize will be given to the winner of each category, and all winning apps will be earn a spotlight turn in V Cast Apps--Verizon Wireless will also feature the winning apps in its marketing efforts. "We want to drive innovation, we want to drive quality and we want to drive customer appeal," Verizon Wireless senior vice president of product development Roger Guarani said Tuesday. "We also want to create some excitement with our Verizon Developer Community."
