China to have 425m telephones by '09 - report

China's fixed-line subscriber base will grow 4% to 5% from 2006 to 2009, resulting in a subscriber base of 425 million by 2009, a report from Research and Markets predicted.

The report said aggressive operator implementations and government-led initiatives would serve as catalysts for the rollout of more fixed lines in China.

However, mobile phone subscribers would continue to outpace the growth of fixed-line users, the research firm said.

It said China's mobile phone subscriber base would reach 640 million by the same period.

The report also noted that improvements in network construction would lead to more and more 3G subscribers and, in the next five to six years, China's 3G subscriber base would be about 40% of the overall market.

China's broadband subscriber base, meanwhile, was also expected to grow at the rate of more than 21% to reach the level of about 101 million by the end of 2009, the report further said.
