Du thrives on mobile data in 1Q

United Arab Emirates operator du maintained momentum in profit growth through 1Q12, growing the figure 61.8% year-on-year, and 34% quarter-on-quarter.

The carrier netted a profit of 666 million Dirhams (€140 million) in the recent quarter, as revenue climbed 20.1% year-on-year to 2.4 billion Dirhams. The bulk of sales growth came from du’s mobile business, which generated 1.92 billion Dirhams in 1Q12 compared to 1.58 billion Dirhams in 1Q11 on the back of a 15.5% rise in mobile data revenue.

du also enjoyed hefty gains in its fixed line revenue during the quarter, growing the figure 21.2% year-on-year to 409 million Dirhams.

Chief executive Osman Sultan says the most important aspect of the 1Q results are that top-line growth has “been achieved with greater efficiency.” He adds that du’s focus on growing mobile data income and post-paid subscriber numbers should “deliver the greatest value to all of our stakeholders.”
