Voice over LTE (VoLTE) may be the largest driver for the implementation of IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) core equipment by operators, but it also presents new challenges such as a limited set of compatible handsets and a weak business case, according to a new report from Infonetics Research. The report notes that it will be difficult to justify spending capital on a new network for just voice that represents flat-to-declining revenue, requiring providers to look well beyond running voice over IMS.
