Infonetics: WiMAX equipment sales still bigger than LTE

While many within the wireless industry believe that WiMAX is on a downward spiral, Infonetics Research claims in a new report that sales of the technology continue to outstrip LTE. "With the high volume of LTE news, people tend to overlook the fact that the WiMAX equipment market, which jumped 85 per cent in 2010 to $1.7 billion, remains bigger than the LTE market, and continues to show healthy growth," Richard Webb, directing analyst for WiMAX, microwave, and mobile devices at Infonetics Research, said in a statement. The firm maintains that 2G and 3G upgrades and new deployments presently remain the major activity for infrastructure sales, and it will be 2015 before LTE and WiMAX have a more significant impact as operators trigger a global procurement cycle for new technology.
