iPhone boosts T-Mobile data traffic by 30%

Despite the tribulations surrounding the launch of Apple's iPhone, T-Mobile is understandably very pleased to have persisted given that data usage is as much as 30 times higher than on other phones.

According to René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom, the parent of T-Mobile, the average Internet usage for an iPhone is more than 100Mb: "This is 30 times the use for our average contract-based consumer customers." Obermann did not clarify if this was a per month usage or whether it related to the U.S. or Germany.

But Obermann claims that the iPhone is critical in helping to drive up mobile data use for the operator. "iPhone customers retrieve weather reports, stock prices and YouTube videos from the Internet on the go--all as a matter of course."
