mHealth service goes live with Orange Austria

A new service has been launched by Orange Austria that is designed to improve the daily lives of those affected by chronic illnesses. The company said that the service, which is also being supported by Alcatel-Lucent and the Austrian Workers' Samaritan Association, is available now from its 93 Austrian retail stores following a 12-month trial with 42 patients.

Orange said that the service is capable of making measurements, such as blood pressure or blood sugar levels, that would then be automatically encrypted and sent via mobile phone to a central service platform. The cost of the service, which has been branded as 'healthe health package', is €10 per month and includes data transmission and use of the medical platform, plus access for up to five users.

Customers can also subscribe to a notification feature, costing €2 per month, which alerts a user via SMS or e-mail if a measurement is missed or the readings are outside of normal parameters.

Separately, a consortium of international groups, including the mHealth Alliance, have called for collaboration to accelerate the use of ICT, especially wireless, to improve maternal and newborn health in the developing world.

David Aylward, executive director of the mHealth Alliance, an umbrella group launched last year by the Rockefeller, UN and Vodafone Foundations, said, "Wireless networks go almost everywhere today. So should life saving information and services for mothers and newborn babies."
