MTV shells out $175m to take over game developer

Viacom's MTV Networks will buy Harmonix Music Systems, a developer of music-themed video games, for $175 million in cash, an Associated Press report said.

The report said Harmonix was the developer behind Guitar Hero and other music games for Sony's PlayStation 2.

The deal was expected to close in the fourth quarter, the report said.

Last year Harmonix and MTV formed a partnership that used the video game title in original programming and competitions on a number of MTV platforms.
