News In Brief: ECI in BRIC, Flirtomatic focuses, Spirent aspires

Frost & Sullivan reckons ECI Telecom is the leading vendor in Russia in transmission, with a 24% market share in the SDH, DWDM and ROADM market. The Russian transmission market is one of the fastest growing in the world, having experienced 50% growth in 2007, against an average global industry's growth rate of 20%.

ECI recently announced its leadership in the Indian transmission market for the third year running and is also in Brazil and China "with local offices and growing revenues".

ECI claims it is one of the top three vendors in the Chinese utelco (utilities moving into telecoms service provision) market and says it plans to address this opportunity in Russia.

Spirent Communications will pay its first annual dividend for six years after the telecoms equipment testing group received a boost from the weakness of sterling, the FT said.

The group said it would make a final pay-out of 0.6p after two years of cost-cutting after a management change resulted in a surfeit of cash. Together with an interim dividend, it will mean a total pay-out of 1.1p for the year.
