News in brief: Telcordia, Intellectual Ventures; NSN in China; Retelit funds; Norwegian net neutrality

Intellectual Ventures and Telcordia Technologies announced an alliance today to exploit Telcordia's technology innovations and Intellectual Ventures' experience in licensing telecom inventions. 

Through this deal, Intellectual Ventures acquires rights to license approximately 500 of Telcordia's US patents and corresponding international patents. Intellectual Ventures is also making a longer-term commitment to fund inventions from Telcordia's Advanced Technology Solutions laboratory, while allowing Telcordia to maintain control and freedom to determine its R&D programme.

Nokia Siemens Networks has won contracts worth €880 million from China Unicom and China Mobile to supply 2G and 3G mobile network equipment to the two operators throughout 2009.

NSN will roll out WCDMA networks for China Unicom in 11 provinces across China and provide China Mobile with TD-SCDMA and GSM networks. The framework agreements were announced during a visit of the China-Europe Purchasing Delegation to Germany. The delegation is a Chinese Ministry of Commerce initiative, aimed at strengthening Sino-European Union trade ties in the current economic downturn.

Italian services provider Retelit obtained €20 million funding to support its WiMAX venture from a consortium of banks headed by Centrobanca and 50% underwritten by Unicredit Corporate Banking, with a duration of seven years until September 2015. Retelit has been allocated 3.5GHz frequencies in northern and central Italy.

The Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority is calling for providers to endorse guidelines on network neutrality. Some are already backing the guidelines drawn up by a working group headed by the Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority (NPT). They include Get, ICT Norway, Lyse Tele, the Norwegian Media Businesses Association, NextGenTel, the Norwegian Cable TV Association, Schibsted, Telenor, Telio Telecom, the consumer protection agencies Consumer Ombudsman and the Consumer Council of Norway, in addition to NPT.
