HP, Qualcomm team for high-speed connectivity

HP and Qualcomm last week announced they were teaming up to incorporate Qualcomm's Gobi global mobile Internet technology in select 2008 HP business notebooks to enable high-speed connectivity on 3G UMTS/HSPA and EV-DO networks in a single wireless solution.

The idea is to usurp WiFi, as Qualcomm noted the technology will give users access to high-speed data services without having to search for a WiFi hotspot. Both HP and Qualcomm want to see operators adopting a more WiFi hotspot business approach by offering limited-time or day passes. Some operators such as Verizon have tested this concept but have yet to roll out the capability wide scale.
