AMD buys ATI for $5.4B

Intel rival and chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is all set to pocket graphics-card specialist ATI Technologies for an estimated $5.4 billion. The acquisition is sure to put the graphics specialist's long-standing relationship with Intel and graphics-developer NVIDIA at risk: A merged ATI and AMD would be self-sufficient in offering integrated solutions of their own to device manufacturers. Deals of the past see ATI favoring Intel's platform.
