Apple to dominate tablets through 2015, says Gartner

According to research firm Gartner, Apple's iOS operating system will own the majority of the worldwide "media tablet" market through 2015. The firm said, due to the success of Apple's iPad, iOS will account for 69 percent of the media tablet market in 2011 and 47 percent of the media tablet market in 2015. The firm said Google's share of the market, via its Android OS, will reach 20 percent in 2011 and grow to 39 percent in 2015. However, Gartner said Google's decision not to open up Android 3.0 to third parties "will prevent fragmentation, but it will also slow the price decline and ultimately cap market share." Further, Gartner's Carolina Milanesi said Apple competitors are prioritizing hardware features over applications, services and overall user experience--which she said is a mistake. "Tablets will be much more dependent on the latter than smartphones have been, and the sooner vendors realize that the better chance they have to compete head-to-head with Apple," she said. Release
