Chipset M&A heating up this year, having hit $11B already

So far 2014 is the biggest year for deals among chipset companies since 2011--and it's not over yet. Almost $11 billion worth of North American semiconductor transactions were announced in the first half of 2014, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. At least a dozen more chipmakers have had merger discussions this year, according to unnamed sources cited by Bloomberg. Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), Intel and Samsung Electronics now have more than $100 billion in cash and equivalents, more than 80 percent more than in 2010, leading many analysts to speculate they could be planning more deals later this year. One potential target is Broadcom's baseband unit, which Broadcom indicated in June it might sell to a competitor.
