Cisco updates products with IMS offerings

Cisco said it plans to update its networking products suite with IMS technology offerings so carriers can build out their 3G data services. For the uninitiated, IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) standards specify the protocols for bringing IP-based services to wireless cellular networks. Cisco has offered very limited IMS-based offerings to date; but updated IMS products include the company's 12000 IP router, media gateway, softswitch and PSTN gateway products. Switching between VoIP and 3G, push-to-talk and mobile instant messaging are a few of the features IMS facilitates.
