Huawei warns of a fractured network gear market following NSA revelations

Huawei is warning that the global technology industry, especially the makers of network equipment, could split along geographic or political lines in the wake of a recent report that the National Security Agency has targeted specific technology products. Huawei is pushing for international cooperation among various tech companies to create standards and best practices to better protect data and networks, the Wall Street Journal notes. "There's a very real concern for political or geography-based balkanization, which is in nobody's best interest," William Plummer, Huawei's vice president of external affairs, told the Journal. On Dec. 30, Der Spiegel reported that the NSA has targeted Huawei products, as well as those of Cisco Systems, Dell, Juniper Networks and Hewlett-Packard, with malicious software and hardware that create backdoors in products. Huawei, which has been effectively banned from the network business in the United States because of espionage concerns, said it is "conducting audits of its products to determine if any compromise has occurred." If so, it will make and communicate appropriate fixes, Plummer said. Article (sub. req.)
