According to a recent report from ABI Research, EDGE handsets are set to take 14 percent of the wireless handset market. EDGE handsets will grow to 148 million shipments this year. ABI's Stuart Carlaw says "the technology still represents the only viable choice for supporting seamless service delivery on a very wide area basis." Carlaw says neither WiMAX, LTE nor HSUPA can cover as much geography and guarantee minimum service requirements on a wide scale. The gauntlet has been thrown.
