SPOTLIGHT: Verso and Shiron demo GSM over satellite

Verso Technologies and Shiron Satellite Communications said they have successfully completed tests that involve interoperability between satellite and mobile phones and the deployment of a GSM backhaul operation for an operator in Colombia. Verso says the joint development can slash costs by half for many service providers who want to extend service to remote places. The Verso and Shiron combination utilizes Verso's GSM compression and optimization solutions and Shiron's InterSKY RBOD (Real-Time Bandwidth-On-Demand technology). Sounds a lot like what satellite operators like Globalstar want to do with ATC (Ancilliary Terrestrial Component) technology to reduce the cost of satellite service delivery. Article
