Trend: Japanese handset makers face tougher competition

Several years ago, Japan's top handset makers expected to ride the waves of DoCoMo's i-mode success to global market share. Today many of these same companies are retreating from foreign markets and facing competition from their Western rivals at home. DoCoMo now plans to offer Nokia 3G phones on its FOMA service with plans to launch a Motorola handset this summer. Total handset shipments from all of Japan's top handset vendors combined equals only one-third of Nokia's total output.
