Verizon offers 1 GB of free data under Thanksgiving promotion, while MetroPCS unveils BOGO smartphone offer

Hot on the heels of Sprint's (NYSE: S) promotional offer to cut the rate plans in half of customers who switch to Sprint from Verizon (NYSE: VZ), AT&T Mobility (NYSE: T) and T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS), Verizon and T-Mobile's MetroPCS prepaid brand are rolling out their own promotions ahead of Black Friday. Verizon is offering 1 GB of free data to customers on qualifying plans, and MetroPCS is rolling out a "Buy One Get One" smartphone offer for Black Friday shoppers.

Under Verizon's "Thanksgetting" promotion, customers can log into their accounts to redeem the 1 GB of data, which can only be redeemed one time per account. The data will be added to the customer's existing monthly data allowance and applies to data usage after the date on which the offer is redeemed. The 1 GB of free data will be shared by all lines on an account.

However, the Verizon offer is only valid for customers who have a new "Verizon Plan" rate plan with shared data, a legacy More Everything shared data plan, Share Everything shared data plan or Verizon's Small Business Plan.

Other Thanskgetting offers that can be redeemed the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 25, include a $5 iTunes gift card, as well as offers from Amazon, Boingo Wireless, GoGo in-flight Wi-Fi, Lyft and Pandora. Verizon had a similar offer last year.

Meanwhile, MetroPCS said that starting today and running through the end November, customers who buy any phone at a participating MetroPCS store will get one of several phones free of charge (plus sales tax), when they activate it on one of MetroPCS' new plans. The phones include the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime, Kyocera Hydro Wave, LG Leon, LG 450 and ZTE Obsidian.

The offers come shortly after AT&T Mobility's (NYSE: T) Cricket Wireless prepaid brand said last week it will offer the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime and LG G Stylo for $29.99 and $49.99, respectively, and select LTE smartphones for free, after a mail-in rebate Cricket Visa Promotion card, when customers port their number to Cricket and activate a new smartphone plan. The phones customers can get for free after the rebate include the LG Risio, Motorola Moto E, Nokia Lumia 635 and ZTE Overture 2. The offers are available online or at more than 3,800 Cricket Wireless stores nationwide, the company said, and the promotion ends Jan. 7, 2016.
