PacketZoom aims to optimize app performance and minimize latency on cell networks and Wi-Fi.

PacketZoom raised $5 million in a series A round as it continues to expand its efforts to help app publishers boost the performance of their apps.

The San Mateo, California-based company claims to remove “performance roadblocks” of mobile apps on Wi-Fi and cellular networks PacketZoom—which was named to FierceWireless’s Fierce 15 in August—and it claims to be the only company to offer an in-app technology built specifically for native apps that has been proven to accelerate mobile applications.

The series A round was led by Baseline Ventures; other participants include First Round Capital, Tandem Capital and Arafura Ventures.

“Today’s announcement is a testament to PacketZoom’s success,” CEO Shlomi Gian said in a press release. “Poor network quality causes mobile app publishers operational challenges and costs them millions in lost monetization opportunities. PacketZoom’s platform is the only solution that’s been designed from the ground up to address these issues. Our platform provides mobile app developers with real-time insights, control and optimization capabilities without needing to make any code changes.”

The four-year-old startup had 18 full-time employees as of August and had raised $6 million before its latest round. In June it opened an office in Southeast Asia and has secured partnerships with several publishers in the region. Indeed, the company appears to have sharpened its focus on improving latency speeds of apps in markets where latency can be particularly problematic.

“The funding will be used to continue the company’s business expansion with additional presence in Southeast Asia, Europe and Latin America,” according to PacketZoom’s announcement. “Together with its China operation, PacketZoom is well positioned to serve app developers in the fastest-growing mobile markets. The funding will also enable PacketZoom to fill key positions in its executive team.”
